Bipin Ganatra, the man who is an unofficial volunteer firefighter whose name is rarely known to us has achieved a great honor by the Government. In the previous, 2017 the man was awarded the Padma Shri for saving more than 10,000 of lives from fire. The man by profession is an electrician in Kolkata, West Bengal.
After losing his brother to fire at just the tender age of 12, the man had a will to protect people from fire and he does the same as a volunteer firefighter. The man also somehow manages to help the police to manage traffic. He does not have any professional training regarding the firefighting.
He has been described as the ‘Fire Chaser’ The 61 years old man told to the BBC, “he just wanted to continue his work and help the people in the eastern city of Kolkata.”
After getting the fourth highest civilian award the savior who thinks himself ordinary said, “I am an ordinary person and am completely overwhelmed by the news. I don’t want to make it a big issue. I just want to continue doing my work.”
“I worry whether I will be able to honor the award. It is such a big responsibility” he added further.
Earlier in 2017, one of the senior fire service officials told the BBC, “He’s a very spirited and brave man. For someone who has no formal knowledge of fire-fighting, he does a very good job. He is like a guide to our firemen, and he uses our equipment. He works almost like a professional now.”
The man has rescued many lives and attended almost three fires in a single day in case of emergency. There were more than 1,600 fires in Kolkata in 2015 and 2000 fires in the year 2014.
