Sacred Games Review: First Global Show that depicts the strength of Indian Filmmakers

Netflix original ‘Sacred Games’ has been streamed online and has received rave reviews from the audience as well as the audience for its unique style of making. For the web series, India’s biggest talents Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, Vikramaditya Motwane, Anurag Kashyap came together. Said Ali Khan plays inspector Sartaj Singh in Netflix’s Sacred Games while Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the antogonist role of Ganesh Gaitonde.

The show is inspired from Vikram Chandra epic book Sacred Games.  The show is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane who earlier directed movies like Udaan, Lootera and the recent Bhavesh Joshi Superhero.  He was contacted by Netflix and he read the 900-page book in time and set up a meeting with Netflix. It is the first Indian original of Netflix, a popular streaming giant. Motwane said,“it would mean more work for all of us, more work for new writers, actors, directors, and as an Indian, something to be really proud of.”

As he alone cannot handle such a huge project who joined hands with popular and talented direct Anurag Kashyap.  The two divided the work to direct the original based on their schedule. While Motwane would direct Apte and star Saif Ali Khan in Sartaj Singh’s story Kashyap would direct talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who plays a gangster Ganesh Gaitonde.

Sacred Movies is not about winning numbers at the box-office on weekends

When the Netflix approached, they asked the directors duo to direct it in English with Hindi words here and there, but Kashyap never want to do anything based in India in English.” The directors even restricted the actors from reading the novel as they did not want their cast to restrict their ‘perceptions and expectations from the characters’.

While Motwane spent a year with writer Varun Grover and his partners figuring out the direction that he needs to take care of while on the other hand Kashyap was busy directing Ganesh Gaitonde’s character in his characteristically freewheeling style.

Despite the fact that the show is being directed by two directors, it feels seamless.  Nawaz who umpteen times played a negative shade role in his career says it feels refreshing to work for Netflix.  Rapper Divine wrote original song for the show.

Gaitonde compares himself to God and out of the blue, he calls Sartaj Singh and warns him that in 25 days, the city that they both love will be decimated.  Director Motwane said,“The idea was to take a local story and make it work for a global audience.”

Motwane said“Anurag and I don’t make the kind of films that are going to perform on a Friday or a Saturday or a Sunday.”

As a whole, this Netflix original is going to put India on a world map of Cinema, making every Indian proud.
