Dipa Karmakar bags gold in Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup; Modi lauds gymnast

As per latest news, Dipa Karmakar has turned out to be the first Indian gymnast to bag gold medal at a global event that took place on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Dipa said that now, she would make a huge effort for the top postition at the Asian Games in Jakarta starting August 2018.

The well known personality pocketed the women’s vault at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey, after attaining a score of 14.150 points prior to Rifda Irfanaluthfi of Indonesia (13.400 points) and local girl Goksu Uctas Sanli (13.200).

An elated Dipa stated, “More than the gold, what was important for me was to perform at the optimum level. I am happy I could do that considering the fact that at the beginning of the year, I was hobbling back to fitness.”

“Getting back into top gear makes me believe that my knee has healed completely and I should now be able to go all out at the Asian Games,” she added up.

Dila was participating in her first international occasion since narrowly missing an Olympic medal in Rio during the year 2016.

A knee injury while practising during April 2017 meant that Karmakar was out of rivalry for the past two-and-half years.

The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) damage required surgical treatment and because she required additional time to get better than anticipated, Karmakar gave a miss to the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, earlier this year.

“Topping the preliminary round gave me a lot of confidence. I am very thankful to my coach and people who have worked hard to bring me back to competitive gymnastics,” added Karmakar, who finished the qualification round with a score of 13.400.

Rakesh Kumar Patra, the other personality from India to contend in Turkey, stayed on the fourth place in the rings.

Today, the gymnast came back to India and was really in the celebratory mood.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Dipa Karmarkar on Monday.

Modi made a special tweet to congratulate the Indian athlete, “India is proud of @DipaKarmakar!… This win is a prime example of her tenacity and never-say-die attitude.”
